Common auto electrical jobs in Kirkwood

Most homes in Kirkwood are recent builds and most cars in the driveways are recent too. Newer vehicles bring their own electrical quirks, and the trails at the Gladstone Mountain Bike Park bring plenty of bike racks.

Bike racks and number plates

With the Gladstone Mountain Bike Park on Kirkwood's doorstep, towbar bike racks are everywhere. Queensland's towing guidance says number plates must not be obscured by accessories such as bike racks, and a loaded rack often hides the plate and tail lights. A light board that plugs into the towbar socket solves both. If the board flickers or doesn't light, check the socket first, as many faults start there. Check current Queensland rules before you buy.

Stop-start and smart charging

Many newer cars have stop-start systems and smart alternators that vary charging to save fuel. They need the right battery type, usually AGM or EFB, and some need the new battery registered with the car's computer after fitting. Putting in a standard battery, or skipping registration, can lead to stop-start not working and a short battery life. See what is a smart alternator for how these systems behave.

Reversing cameras and sensors

Kirkwood's newer streets are full of kids on bikes and scooters, so reversing cameras and parking sensors get a lot of use. Common faults include a camera that shows a blank screen after car washing, sensors that beep at nothing because of dirt or a cracked sensor, and cameras added to older second cars that flicker because of a poor earth. Most are simple to trace once you know where the wiring runs.

Adding accessories to newer cars

Fitting a USB outlet, a fridge socket or extra lights to a late-model car is different from doing it on an older one. Many circuits are monitored by the car's computer, and tapping into the wrong wire can set off warnings or upset other systems. Run accessories from their own fused supply off the battery, using a relay where needed. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay explains the basics.

Kirkwood auto electrical questions

Do I really need an AGM battery in my stop-start car?

If the car came with an AGM or EFB battery, replace it with the same type. These batteries are built for the frequent restarts and deeper cycling that stop-start brings. A standard battery may fit but usually won't last, and the stop-start system may switch itself off. Check your owner's manual or the label on the old battery.

My towbar socket works for my trailer but not my bike rack light board. Why?

Check the plug type first. A light board with a different plug, or an adaptor with a loose pin, is a common cause. If the plug matches, test the board on another car. Light boards get knocked around on trails and their internal wiring can break where the cable enters the board.

Local tip for Kirkwood

If you've just bought a late-model car, find out whether it needs its battery registered before you ever have to replace it. Write the battery type and any registration step in the logbook. When the battery fails on a hot morning, whoever replaces it will know straight away what to fit and what to do afterwards.
