Common auto electrical jobs in Calliope

Calliope is part country town and part Gladstone commuter suburb, about 20 km out on the Dawson Highway. Highway travel, rural blocks and the Calliope River all shape the work.

Caravans charging on the highway

Calliope is right on the Bruce Highway, so it's a natural starting point for caravan trips north to Rockhampton or south towards Bundaberg. A common complaint is a van battery that doesn't charge while towing. Thin cable from the car to the van, a smart alternator and a basic isolator are the usual culprits. A DC-DC charger in the van or car fixes most of these. See why isn't my caravan battery charging while towing.

Rodents in the wiring

Cars, utes and machinery parked in sheds on acreage blocks around Calliope attract rats and mice, especially in cooler months. They nest in warm engine bays and chew wiring insulation, which can cause anything from a dead indicator to a car that won't start. Look for droppings, nesting material and chewed plastic. Repairs should use proper joins and heat shrink. Our guide on rodent damage to car wiring covers prevention.

Farm utes and spotlights

Utes on rural blocks along Gladstone–Monto Road work hard and pick up extras: spotlights, work lights, pumps and UHF radios. Corroded switches and undersized wiring are common, especially where gear was added over years by different owners. Each accessory should have its own fuse and, for lights, a relay. Check current Queensland rules before using spotlights or light bars on public roads.

Battery light on the Dawson Highway

The Dawson Highway west of Calliope links Gladstone with Biloela and the mining and farming country beyond, and it can be a long way between towns. If the battery warning light comes on while driving, the alternator usually isn't charging and the car is running on battery alone. Turn off non-essential loads and head for the nearest safe place. Our guide on the battery warning light explains what to do.

Calliope auto electrical questions

How do I stop rats getting into my car's wiring?

Keep the shed or carport free of food and nesting material, move the car regularly, and check under the bonnet if it's been parked for a while. Some owners use traps around parked vehicles. If you find chewed wires, have them repaired properly with soldered or crimped joins and heat shrink, not just tape.

Why won't my caravan battery charge from my new car?

Many newer cars have smart alternators that lower their output voltage once the starting battery is charged. That voltage may be too low to charge a van battery through a long cable. A DC-DC charger boosts and regulates the voltage, so the van battery charges properly while you drive.

Local tip for Calliope

Before heading off on a long trip through the Calliope Crossroads, plug the van in and check every light with someone standing behind it: tail lights, brake lights, both indicators and the reversing light. Then check the van battery is charging with the engine running. Ten minutes in the driveway is far easier than fixing it on the side of the Bruce Highway.
